CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS [COVERART PAIR #36]

[COVERART PAIR #36]

Ideal “Bi Nuu” [Warner Bros, 1983]  /  W.H.Y. “Woman of Steel” [IC Records, 1983]

W.H.Y. was a short-lived side-project of Aussie music legend Mike Rudd (Spectrum, Ariel)

Ideal were a German electronic pop/rock outfit

When I originally hung this pair of covers on the wall (in the days before Vinyl Connection) it was the design symmetry that grabbed me. The similarity of the torsos and the arm angles was, I thought, very striking. In the absence of much personalising detail, the juxtaposition of the images produced an interesting geometric effect.

When I came to take the photo of the pair to publish here I accidentally swapped the covers, left and right.

This produced a very different image.

And suggested a very different story.

Why domestic violence is the most important issue this International Women’s Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day each year.

Family Violence is an everyday issue. Every day.

  1. I appreciated this post on a number of levels. First and foremost, as you point out, the difference the cover swap made: very striking! Second, I hadn’t thought of the band Ideal in ages. When I spent my junior year of college in what was then West Germany, their song “Schoene Blaue Augen” was very popular. Lastly, I’m a huge Todd Rundgren fan–such a talent…he was on the list of likely subjects for my own blog posts. “Can We Still Be Friends” is one of my favorite cuts on “Hermit of Mink Hollow”. As always, thanks!

    1. Now there is a piece I would enjoy reading/publishing: ‘Beautiful Blue Eyes’ and a Bostonian college student in West Germany. Remember my offer!
As for Todd, I know he is widely revered but I’ve never quite accessed his work. Listened to A Wizard A True Star in the car this morning: thought of Zappa and a white soul singer doing off-Broadway songs. I’m sure the failing is entirely mine.

  2. Love Todd; don’t know the German band; hate domestic violence. Good post – a point cleverly made and neatly put together!

    1. Thanks Marie. Been sitting on that cover pair for a while awaiting suitable timing.

      Normal frivolity will resume directly.
