10 MORE MOTORISED ALBUM COVERS

Not a sedan in sight as we venture into more exotic internal combustion territory. I’m sure there are album covers out there with traction engines adorning them, but sadly I couldn’t find one. So we’ll have to settle for motorbikes, vans, semi-trailers, agricultural vehicles, a bus or two and, er, a tank.
Happy motoring!

Buffalo - Average Rock

Novi Quartet

Fu Manchu

Randy Pie - Highway driver

Aerosmith - Pump

  1. I only own three of these!

    1. Three is impressive, Mr L. As this post was curated (following the first joint car post with 1537), I can reveal that I have three also. When this silly automotive obsession is over (next week), it’ll be back to the Vinyl Connection collection.

      1. Wait — what’s silly about an automotive obsession? Sammy Hagar would have words with you….

        1. You are correct. Silly of me. How could over a thousand record covers be wrong?!

          1. Record covers never lie! At least, I hope not. I base my life decisions on them!

        2. Meant to check, Mike. Your three would be: Def L, Aerosmith and Fu Manchu?
If ‘Yes’, check out the early Buffalo albums – Aussie heavy rock.

          1. You know me, man! There were others here I wanted to check out. Buffalo looks cool!

  2. Love that Mutton Birds cover! Fantastic pic.

    1. One of my faves too. The band are terrific. New Zealand alt-pop with melodic strength. Kind of an off-road Crowded House.

  3. Excellent stuff, though Novi Quartet and Randy Pie qualify as exceptional.

    1. Isn’t that Novi Quartet cover a beaut! So glad you enjoyed it. I imagine the art team discussing the idea…
“So we get a tractor, yes?”
“A small one, that we can push.”
“Of course. Who shall drive?” …etc.

      1. It is. Someone in their camp got their stripes when they suggested that arrangement.

  4. The seemingly flying tractor trailer/electric guitar is a standout!

    1. ‘Tis indeed. Sort of a heavy transport cousin to ZZ Top’s Afterburner maybe?

  5. Another fine collection, Bruce. I’m pleased to report that I own four of these albums, but I hadn’t heard of or seen most of the others. Honorable mention to Prefab Sprout’s “Two Wheels Good”?

    1. Nice one. Suggesting a more diligent curator could have compiled 10 motorbike covers. Should I sack meself?

      1. Nope, I love this post as is. The diversity of wheeled transportation is what makes it so cool.

Aerosmith, Def L, Van Dyke Parks and Joe Walsh?

      1. Close. Swap out VDP for The Who and you’ve got the four albums I own from this post.

  6. Nice ! Always loved that Joe Walsh and while I previously thought the Def Leppard cover a little corny, looking at it here, I’m seeing its glory. Looking forward to the next one too. Besides the earlier one I suggested, I’m thinking maybe one with extra stretchy bubble gum maybe?

    1. Sadly (?) the bubblebum one (by Hipgnosis, no less) is mired in politically correct bureaucracy and so there’ll be no sting in the tale this time. Sorry.

  7. Oh the joys of the alluring Randy Pie cover are endless. I really wanted to see Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout here. Another great celebration of internal combustion thanks.

    1. That seedy Randy Pie cover got a couple of votes! Yes, Steve McQueen (the album not the person – though his Bullit car could have somehow inveigled its way into an earlier post in the series maybe) it absolutely appropriate. I keep wondering about a motorbike series…

    1. I’ve had enough of thundering aeroplanes for a couple of weeks, thanks. Well, being inside them anyway.

  9. Another Johnny Guitar Watson cover to add from me please, the motorised-cart classic ‘A Real Mother For Ya’.

    1. Now that is a wonderful cover. View here.
But is it motorised? Looks suspiciously like a bicycle vehicle to me! But as you get so many bonus points for the suggestion, that quibble is immaterial.

  10. I haven’t checked but surely the wurzles must have had a traction engine on an album cover?
Anyway how about the tank featured on the Gorillaz LP?

    1. Another tank cover was suggested as well. The military equipment sub-theme could probably work, it seems.
      Thanks for dropping by.
