After the Tomita article, there was a quiver of interest in album covers featuring space (It’s the final frontier, don’t you know). A couple of fine suggestions were made, and I recalled one or two LPs posted a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Well, that was enough to get me thinking… what else is lost in (the) space of the VC collection?
Here are 10 space-themed covers for your intergalactic enjoyment.

THANKS TO
James (Resurrection Songs) for the pointer towards Afghan Whigs
Victim of the Fury for the Camel reminder

The Afghan Whigs was sourced from the www, as was one other album that I really wish I owned.
Which is your favourite?
Cool selection, Bruce, I never would have thought I’d see a Chuck Berry album with a sci-fi cover!
I would have also suggested Adelbert von Deyen’s `Atmosphere’ or even `Planets’ (Hmmm, even his `Sternzeit’ and `Nordborg’ would probably fit the spacy theme too!) But I oddly am a bit of a von Deyen fanboy!

Yep, I”ve logged you are a big Adelbert Aficionado. I just have two: Atmospheres and Sternzeit. Certainly the former would have been considered had I thought of it!
While you’re visiting, Michael, did you catch the new All India Radio album?

Very fun. Also: Adventures in Utopia (Todd Rundgren’s 1979 Utopia album) http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x432/pierleo22/LPBEATLES/utopia_adventures1_zpsf6883ff2.jpg

Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman, seriously this is the greatest title ever, and yes the juvenile idiot in me is out tonight.

Yeah but No but Yeah but it IS the best title ever. And probably my favourite cover too.

Love that Chuck Berry one 😉
You also reminded me to stick on Parliament’s Mothership Connection again. I wants to get funked up!

One day, Parliament was traveling on the mothership, fooling around with the Funk, when George Clinton kicked the Funk clean overboard. That was July the Second, 1979, the Day the Funk died. Two weeks later, I found the Funk, in bed with a conger eel. At first I thought it was a sea anenome, but under closer inspection, I realized it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
I offered to take him back to Parliament, but he said he was done with that shit, and that they never listened to him anyway, and were only interested in his funky produce. So I let him live down here with me in this cave.

That is such a touching story (fans eyes in teenage over-acting way) I am just so glad you shared it because the world needs more stories like this. I hope you and he are very happy and that the cave is warm and dry.

Still a bit lonely here. Not easy being a scaly man-fish.

Far out, man! An eclectic collection, for sure. Other than the Camel (which gets my “favorite” vote), I only have one of these: Mothership Connection.

The Camel is a killer. One for the future maybe: Johnny Guitar Watson’s (yes, him again…) ‘Giant’.

I’ve got three favorites: the Dick Hyman, for the Moog font; the Bardens for the glowing Saturn; and the Barclay James Harvest for that fantastic butterfly. Electric Light Orchestra has some ‘spacey’ covers among its many releases.

I love the DH too, for the font but also for the cut-out Hyman’s (or should that be…).
Yes, ELO, and as Mr Pirate observed, Boston, suggest a Part 2 is required.
PS. Lovely to see your avatar gracing these pages, JDB. BBQ-ed plump calf ’round my place tonight.

My personal favourite space cover is from the unreleased weezer album ‘songs from the black hole’ – not sure who did the art though!

Some spacey goodness here, Bruce! My favourite has to be 1965. You don’t own this in any format?
The Chuck Berry cover is marvellous also. If the Millenium Falcon were a guitar …

Don’t know the Whigs at all, James. Something I should remedy?
Yes, the boy noted the Millennium Falcon similarity (he’s potty about Star Wars, lo! these past 18 months.)

Definitely, Bruce. The Whigs are a great band!

Bit miffed about you not including Lawnmower Deth ‘Ooh Crikey’ LP here.

Abject apologies. That is indeed a serious omission. Perhaps I can squeeze it in to the fast emerging Part 2… as soon as you suggest a title for the post.

I’ll have to plump for the 2001 soundtrack here as it was one of the first albums I ever bought having seen the film when it came out. I even had a documentary album of the Gemini Space mission, which comprised the communications between the ship and mission control. It was on the budget Wing label. We knew how to entertain ourselves in those days!

I’m sure Gemini parties were all the rage for a while there, despite the recordings being mostly unintelligible I imagine. Thanks for your comments, Simon.
