After the Tomita article, there was a quiver of interest in album covers featuring space (It’s the final frontier, don’t you know). A couple of fine suggestions were made, and I recalled one or two LPs posted a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Well, that was enough to get me thinking… what else is lost in (the) space of the VC collection?

Cool selection, Bruce, I never would have thought I’d see a Chuck Berry album with a sci-fi cover!
I would have also suggested Adelbert von Deyen’s `Atmosphere’ or even `Planets’ (Hmmm, even his `Sternzeit’ and `Nordborg’ would probably fit the spacy theme too!) But I oddly am a bit of a von Deyen fanboy!

One day, Parliament was traveling on the mothership, fooling around with the Funk, when George Clinton kicked the Funk clean overboard. That was July the Second, 1979, the Day the Funk died. Two weeks later, I found the Funk, in bed with a conger eel. At first I thought it was a sea anenome, but under closer inspection, I realized it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
I offered to take him back to Parliament, but he said he was done with that shit, and that they never listened to him anyway, and were only interested in his funky produce. So I let him live down here with me in this cave.

That is such a touching story (fans eyes in teenage over-acting way) I am just so glad you shared it because the world needs more stories like this. I hope you and he are very happy and that the cave is warm and dry.

I’ve got three favorites: the Dick Hyman, for the Moog font; the Bardens for the glowing Saturn; and the Barclay James Harvest for that fantastic butterfly. Electric Light Orchestra has some ‘spacey’ covers among its many releases.

I’ll have to plump for the 2001 soundtrack here as it was one of the first albums I ever bought having seen the film when it came out. I even had a documentary album of the Gemini Space mission, which comprised the communications between the ship and mission control. It was on the budget Wing label. We knew how to entertain ourselves in those days!
