Vertigo is a stone classic, for sure. Must break out the Thrill Jockey – haven’t an internal image of that one. What do you think about a non-definitive A-Z?
The sentimentalist in me chooses the Apple label, and the example you chose happens to be from my favorite side of the ‘White Album’, which contains my all-time favorite Beatles song, George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The steamboat on the Reprise label is interesting…I wonder if that was Sinatra’s personal choice? (since he founded the label). I know there were some versions that had his picture on them. I might add something from Nervous Records, whose label depicts a cartoon figure getting a buzz cut from a flying LP!
There was some inner debate about whether to use the outside or inside (i.e.: sliced) apple. Perhaps the other side could be part of a possible A-Z series!
I don’t have much Sinatra at all, though I do have a really early Reprise LP somewhere with a different logo.
Must search out that Nervous Records label – like the sound of that!
I’m going to have to go with Virgin, not just because I love the artwork, because it takes me back to being 17 and one of my fave albums back then, “Hergest Ridge.”
Somewhere tucked away in a box in some storage locker in California, I have that Deja Vu album that was slightly melted and re-formed into (I kid you not) a potato chip and dip plate. It was an ex-girlfriend’s idea of… pop art. And so it goes.
Not only is that more barbaric than anything to come out of California since the Governator, but also the dip would drip through the hole. Thanks (I guess) Marty. 😉
Fun! Of the above, the Atlantic brings back the most immediate wash of fond memories/feelings for me. Initially thought of Casablanca as did many above (KISS Army!!) and then Barking Pumpkin!!
My favourite label also happens to be my favourite album!
I don’t think my copy has that nice cursive writing, nor the N.S.W. caps lock 😀

I’d love to see that White Album installation shop by the Japanese artist. You’d be in heaven, Geoff!

Great choices… Casablanca springs to mind too, they had a cool label design.

Casablanca is great. Thanks Scott. Also makes me think of Asylum and Capricorn. I think I’ve decided on more posts…

I was about to mention Charisma too but I see others have beat me to it!

Ha. We’re all obsessives here, HMO!
I reckon I feel a series coming on, just like the “album covers with cars” one.

The Egg label, Vertigo and the Harvest one have always been favorites, of course you need the Famous Charisma label there.

Aligned again, Neil. And my only excuse for omitting Charisma is that it was almost midnight when I posted. All will be remedied in posts to come…

Some fine examples of great label art, Bruce.

Ooh I like this, especially the Vertigo one. I always loved the Two Tone label’s graphics too.
Modern day ones? I always gravitate towards Thrill Jockey.

An unforgivable omission that almost demands further posts on this topic. Thanks for the prompt.

Hergest Ridge was (and is) a fave of mine too, Rick. It’s a fabulous label.

Oooft! Terrific idea for a post. So good, in fact, I may have to do one of my own!
I love the. Vertigo label… always liked that. So hypnotic. But, it’s hard to look beyond the classic Atlantic Records.
I’d likely have the Sinatra Reprise labels in there. I do like them… one of my favourite labels is from Sinatra At The Sands.

Thanks, Bruce. Your post got me thinking about the labels on the records and the favourites in my collection.
But yeah, I may do a similar post (with a link to yours, of course).
And I’m all for a series! I love this kinda thing.

excellent idea, are you taking submissions for a followup? I might have missed it but I don’t see any mention of Island Records.

I was going to say Casablanca, but it has been mentioned already so I got nothing. Nice list.

Could be an entire grouping for Zappa related labels, couldn’t there?

Ok, after the immediate wash of feeling, it turned out Harvest (Be Bop Deluxe!) was a more lasting soak.
