COVER PAIRS COMPILED [PART FOUR]

Another compilation of the ‘Cover pairs’ posts from the early days of Vinyl Connection.

(The other comps are linked at the bottom of the page)

In case you were wondering, the name of each pair post was a song title.

Hope you find something to enjoy.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Larry Coryell / Alphonse Mouzon – “Back Together Again”  [Atlantic 1977]

Wilbert Longmire – “Sunny Side Up” [CBS 1978]

My favourite from this clutch. Which, sadly, tells you all you need to know about my sense of humour.

The Velvet Underground & Nico [Verve 1967]

Chris Rea – “God’s Great Banana Skin” [East West 1992]

I’m not sure if this pair actually appeared as I was unable to successfully marry the LP with a CD sleeve at the time. How technology has progressed.

What song title would have been appropriate?

BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE

Gordon Jenkins “Complete Manhattan Tower” [Capitol 1956]

The Saints “Prehistoric Sounds” [Harvest, 1978]

I’M LOOKING THROUGH YOU

Buggles “Adventures in Modern Recording” [RCA Carrere 1981]

Passport “Looking Thru ” [ATCO 1974]

    1. Lovely. Cricket, bananas… something about caught in slips?

Hey that’s brilliant Bruce! I am a big fan of Roy Harper but don’t know that album! That should be a really good era for him too, have you listened to it? I assume you have…I think he still plays out and when we were living in the UK I’d hoped to see him but didn’t, probably didn’t try hard enough. For all I know he’s dead, too. That’s how connected I am.

    1. Yes, it is a strong album. Though I’m not by any means a Roy Harper expert. I do have his last album, though: 2013’s Man and Myth. It’s very good.

    2. It’s the US cover for HQ, I have one of these. The Roy walking on water version was too much for the sensitive American psyche.

Ah yes that sensitive psyche. It’s sad. Dullards, we are. Bill

      2. Thanks Neil. Didn’t know that. I always thought Americans were offended by cricket! 😉

    1. I thought there needed to be a prize for the first eggy pun. When I crack it, you’ve won, Aaron!

  4. As for a song title for the banana covers, how about a cover of Slip Slidin’ Away?

  5. Before and After Science! An homage to Eno! Love that Gordon Jenkins cover. – Marty

  6. My favourite part is the titles, notably looking through you!

  7. My favorite had to be Velvet Underground… the first sing title that came to me was Slip Sliding Away as well, an alternate would be Mellow Yellow except that might give Mr 1537 a seizure….

      1. Good point, Danica. 1537 is as sensitive to Donovan as (reading the above comments) the US was to album covers by Roy Harper!

  8. I’ll have to go with the cricket theme. I was aware of that great Roy Harper song from a Mojo magazine CD but never saw the album cover. Have been a big W. Ash fan since seeing them live in 1973.

    1. What a brilliant time to have seen Wishbone Ash live, Rick. Guess that was the tour which produced ‘Live Dates’. Nice one.

  9. Nice. Most striking pair goes to Before and After Science. Both of those covers deserve a spot on a wall.

    1. Ah, very nice J. The genesis of the ‘pairs’ was indeed ‘wall art’. 🙂

  10. Great post, very much enjoying this series. I especially liked the fact that this one also raises a few “what the hell were they thinking?” questions when it comes to album names

    1. I’m glad, Tony. And your comment does suggest another post idea: Albums with ‘What were they thinking’ names…

  11. Thumbs up on a ‘What Were They Thinking’ series of posts; that could be some fun. For my favorite here, I’d go with the Gordon Jenkins….I’m a sucker for the NYC skyline at night. For a banana-themed song, how about some Harry Belafonte: “The Banana Boat Song”?

    1. Belafonte: tick. Now, JDB, are you able to comment on my belief that the Saints cover is essentially the same scene, taken from further back in terms of distance and forward in time?

  12. Great stuff Bruce, I love the Sunny Side Up cover – brilliant. What’s the Wishbone Ash one like?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Probably the last one of theirs that really grabbed me. It has two classic Ash songs, ‘Persephone’ and F.U.B.B.’.

  14. You always keep things fresh on your takes. Unlike CB who gets locked into something and doesn’t move. I have ate the same breakfast since I was a kid : See Wilbert Longmire ‘Sunny Side Up’.
