Friends of Vinyl Connection will know of the interest we have in the Australian World Record Club for its marvellous album cover designs of the sixties and early seventies.
I want to share with you one of my favourites, acquired recently from Mrs Helen Cameron of Keilor Park (via my local Op Shop). Picking up this 1961 LP made me unreasonably (but seasonally) happy. The combination of Christmas iconography and Aussie images is delightful. Hope you like it too.

When it comes to music, however, the all-time favourite around the Vinyl Connection Homestead is Don Burrows genial jazz LP from 1978. It featured in a post from a couple of Christmases ago, wherein the circumstances around my employment as a Father Christmas were revealed. Don, accompanied by George Golla and other notable Australian jazz musos, explores some classic seasonal songs with swinging aplomb. A very accessible and fun album.
Whatever your setting, social connections, spiritual schemes and sipping preferences, have a great day.

your posts have delivered happiness throughout the year.
As the year finishes and I reflect on the listening year, I find that my choice for best album is not one that delivered easy happiness but one that delivered satisfaction via persistence and concentration (‘Set the teeth and stretch the nostrils wide’). The apparently free jazz of Dimensions and Extensions by Sam Rivers (ignored after its recording and then later tacked onto an Andrew Hill album, I think) has wonderful texture, structure and inventiveness. And maybe even some musicality.
Not bad for $10 at JB HiFi

Have a couple of Sam Rivers, though not that particular title. Perseverance is certainly required for much ‘free’ jazz – glad to hear that this one delivered on your suffering, sorry, commitment. Kula Se Mama was one I gave up on but should try stretching my teeth for. 🙂

Hi Ted. The songs were “newly composed” at the time, though to the best of my (limited) knowledge, few are still performed or even known. Still, as you say, beautiful album cover.
