Well, folks, it seems this particular idea doesn’t have legs. Having taken photos for five progressively more challenging editions, however, I intend to push on relentlessly just in case someone out there is a glutton for punishment.
What links these albums?

Once again, I had to rely on Google’s Arabic skills…never would have gotten it! What’s the last album/band?

Never would have gotten it unless I would have opened up the Wikipedia page for each, maybe. Funny but actually leveraging the internet to uncover the answer wouldn’t have seemed right. Would have suggested ‘research’ skills vice the music trivia fetish we so much enjoy holding up as expertise (smile). So… music!
What I really want to know is how that Gary Numan album rates against Replicas?

Victim of the Fury, I must confess I looked up Telekon b/c I didn’t know anything about it. When i read about it, its relationship to Stevie Wonder’s “Hotter than July” clicked.
(and then I confirmed, as a any Google cheater will, both Waitts and XTC — but I was confident in the results prior to checking)

Got it, I think, thanks to the hints in the earlier comments. Otherwise I’d have been well and truly stumped.

All 4 artists appear on the 1001 list – but only Heartattack and Vine made the cut.
I know that’s not the connecting theme of course!

Quiz for Geoff. What page does Heartattack and Vine appear on in The Book? 🤣

Somewhere around halfway!
I loaned out my copy of the book years ago, so I’ve been relying on my spreadsheets ever since – I know it’s right near the top of my 1980s worksheet!
