A cover-art post
Elvis Presley — 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong [RCA 1959]
Stars — Stars [Barclay 1975]
Can — Unlimited Edition [Spoon 2014; Originally Limited Edition 1974]
Yellow Magic Orchestra — X∞Multiples [A&M 1980]
Jean-Michel Jarre — Equinoxe [Polydor 1978]
Feature image: Eric Gale — Multiplication [CBS 1977]
Some excellent additions from readers in the comments below.
And, synchronistically, a ‘multiple’ Spencer Davis in the next post!
The Fall’s 50,000 Fall Fans Can’t Be Wrong is an obvious tribute/parody of the Elvis one.

Thanks Graham. i recalled seeing the Elvis parody years ago but for the life of me couldn’t remember who did it. In my head I thought maybe Bon Jovi? But that that seemed daft. The Fall makes perfect (non-)sense.
Of course, parody covers would be another post all together!

Bon Jovi did one too – 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong.
Fall is a much better riff on it IMO – claiming they’re 1/1000th as popular rather than twice as popular is much cooler.

German indie-rock band Blumfeld also copied the Elvis album cover on their 1994 release L’Etat Et Moi.

Gott im Himmel. I should have made this post in two parts!

Aha! Now I see what you meant by ‘Multiples’…alas, I’m at a loss to provide any additions. (Nice to spot an old Jethro Tull favorite in the header!)

Mott The Hoople used that Escher drawing of the lizards coming out then into the sketch pad, but that’s more ‘Art on your sleeve’ really!

Dave, I think you may have been locked up too long! 😅
However, fabulous effort and 11/10 for commitment. My favourite, that I would definitely have included, is the ABBA cover. In fact, I think it deserves inclusion right now by virtue of its shrinking Russian doll imagery:

Discuss.
🤣
(It’s actually a fabulous cover, innit?)

Ha ha…good distinction that’s not much of a distinction. Apt.

Of course, “50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong” is totally outdated today, as the LP only contains 9 songs. But the cover is terrific! Was copied a few times later.

C’mon! That’s probably almost 25 minutes!
Yes, “Copy Cats” is another possible album cover post. The Fall and Bon Jovi were the culprits on the Elvis one.

Yep, the record was great for 1959. Another tribute to the cover of the Elvis album is “Body Wishes” by Rod Stewart.

How’s about the Gillan*Glover record? Woohoo! Albums covers game!
Elvis Costello and the Attraction’s Get Happy! may not rate because it stops at three… but you’ve got to give it up for Piper at the Gates of Dawn, right?

As for Piper, that level of negotiation can only take place when both parties are (a) on the same continent, and (b) equiped with suitable libations.

Not in the slightest. I believe Bundaberg Ginger beer is quite popular round your parts. (Am aware of outstanding commentary tween I and thou, that will receive attention in the near future).

The cover for YMO’s Xoo Multiplies is quite clever – IF you have the original 10″ version, not the Western compilation release (which, to be fair, is a better album overall). The 10″ has some comedy skits & songs that explain the concept, it’s a mockery of Western attitudes towards Japanese people

Nice addition critter. Although I’ve held the 10″ meditatively, I’ve never closed the deal (probably for the reason you mention: the comp version is better!). It’s a great cover, none-the-less, from an under-rated band.
Thanks for joining in!

It’s delicate, isn’t it? The fine line between “enigmatic mysterious” and “enigmatic axe-murderer”.
