ALBUM COVERS | A DOG’S LIFE

*

ANIMAL LOGIC — Animal Logic  [1989]

RUSH — Signals  [1982]

ERIC CLAPTON — There’s One In Every Crowd  [1975]

BLUR — Parklife  [1994]

THE CRUEL SEA — Three Legged Dog  [1995]

WEEZER — Raditude  [2009]

RICK SPRINGFIELD — Working Class Dog  [1980]

THE CHURCH — Priest = Aura  [1992]

PAVLOV’S DOG — Pampered Menial  [1975]

My favourite is the Pavlov’s Dog LP with an engraving “published by Robert Vernon” [1949]. Vernon was a successful businessman and patron of the arts, making a considerable fortune supplying horses to the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. I was unable to discover the identity of the engraver.

There is a companion artwork on the back cover, and as I happen to have two copies of the album, we can enjoy them side by side.

There are many album covers featuring canines. Do you have a favourite to nominate? No humans! (Until next week)

NEXT — Walking The Dog

BONUS: A delightful contribution from the Bonzos. The card is glued onto the cover.

Maybe it’s because I’m more of a cat person, but aside from Pavlov’s Dog and the Church, there are some pretty bad album covers here!

The Weezer has particularly low production values, doesn’t it? Some classier entrants next week when humans join the canines.🙂

Yes, the Pavlov’s Dog engraving is striking, mention of which reminds me of a cartoon featuring said dog at old fashioned typewriter. Caption read something like what happens to Pavlov’s Dog when he hits return.
Not a single dog pic that I could find amongst my albums.
    Thanks

Do like a good classical conditioning joke, DD. And I do have something for you next week, if I can organ-ise it.

I walked around Wilmington, Delaware one day, and wandered into an old brick building that said “Johnson Victrola Museum.” Turned out Eldridge Reeves Johnson was from that town, and you can imagine how excited I was to learn this!
Especially when they explained who that was. Somebody finally explained he helped create the recorded music industry and the Victor Talking Machine Co. (I asked was that really such a good idea, talking machines, they’re pretty annoying, and the docent said don’t talk like that, they’re also listening machines now and don’t piss them off). So anyway, E.R. Johnson was one of several record companies that licensed that image of Nipper, the dog studying the record player with a puzzled look on his face.
I’d always assumed Nipper was trying to figure out how to pee in that brass trumpet, but the docent told me, it was advertising the incredible verisimilitude of the recording, so convincing that the dog believed his master was somehow inside the cone, even though I believe the man had already passed away, so kind of rotten trick to play on a little dog. But that’s the recording industry for you. But anyway, that’s my favorite cover.

What a decent docent to regale you with those stories. And thank you for your own most excellent tale of a visit to Wilmington.

Previously, the only thing I knew about Delaware was that George Thorogood’s band hailed from there.

The docent was excellent, a retired engineer, dying to fix up the old victrolas but he wasn’t authorized.

And sorry, just remembered, that museum is in Dover, the little state capital, not Wilmington, I visited both towns that day, they’re less than an hour apart. In case you’re ever inclined to visit Delaware.

Phew! That saved me some confusion. Thanks Robert. TBH, I have been revelling in the new work I learned from your contribution: docent. Never heard that before; my dictionary tells me it is used in ‘certain US and European universities and colleges’ for an academic ‘below professorial rank’. Right on!

I think most U.S. museums use that now for their guides/interpreters – that was my job title when I worked at a house museum and the Jamestowne site in Virginia. So the definition might be “far below professorial rank.”

It was considered, Jeff! Perhaps its rejection was partly because it did appear in these pages not so long ago in an album cover post called ‘A Nice Lie Down‘. 😊

Signals was my very first ever RUSH record that I paid out of my pocket so that album and cover have a special meaning to me as that year (82) I was really getting into music.

Great set of Dog covers. The one I remember the most other than Rick Springfield is Alice In Chain’s self titled album with the 3 legged dog.

Enjoyed the visuals on this one. ‘Mongrel’ Bob Seger. ‘Trouble In the Hen House’ Tragically Hip. Love that one. Sure there are a few more in the pi but Im to lazy to expend the brain power. Look forward to the next one. Ill see if I can think of a few you might come up with. I really like the Church cover.

Given my love of dogs, I’m embarrassed it’s taken me this long to review and comment on this post! I scrolled through the offerings and, as I got to Pavlov’s Dog, I immediately said, “Ooh, this is the best one!” Then I saw that it’s your favorite too, so I continue to be in fine company. 🙂 The post clearly struck a chord…fantastic, fun comments. The dog on the Odelay cover is a Komondor…definitely one of the more usual looking canine specimens.

A Komondor, eh? Wiki tells me it is an Hungarian sheepdog. That works, I guess. It could mingle unobtrusively with the livestock.
