It’s been a rough year already in that department and unfortunately the outlook isn’t great, particularly for folks who love the β€˜60s and the β€˜70s. The one consolation about music is it’s here to stay.

Precisely, Christian. That is primarily why I do these posts; to honour the talents of those whose contract has ended and to remind us of the rich legacy.

Several years ago, I saw one of Dame Edna’s shows in New Haven; can’t remember when I’ve laughed so hard. Just riotously funny. A couple of weeks later, while getting a drink during an intermission at the Metropolitan Opera, I spotted someone who looked familiar and realized it was Barry Humphries. I approached him and he confirmed that that was, indeed, the case. When I told him I’d seen him in New Haven, he said something along the lines of “Ah, and how did you find Edna?” and proceeded to refer to her in the third person throughout our entire, truly delightful conversation.

The loss of Tina Turner was a real blow…not just her music, but her strength and grit and determination and proud female voice.

Now that is a fabulous story. Humphries has spoken in interviews about how he ‘steps into’ his characters. Certainly that is true of Dame Edna, who does indeed have a life of her own!

Although I usually don’t include a picture if I don’t have a recording of the artist, an exception was made for Tina Turner for exactly the reasons you mention.

There was a lovely story in the NY Times, not long after Turner died, about her life in Switzerland. Several neighbors and area residents noted how down to earth she was…would do her own errands around town, completely unpretentious. Even though she’d been out of the limelight in recent years, it was such a shock to hear that she’d passed…difficult to imagine that such a force was gone.
