Quite an achievement, Bruce, to review and rank 100 albums coming from so many different Quarters (# Huh?). Always a fabulous read – both entertaining and informative; expanding my horizons too.

Your insights into the Koln concert puts it on top for me.

    # I counted 29 different definitions for the word Quarters, which might be more than the different genres of music represented…but you get the point.

All the best for 2026, cuz.

Thanks DD. Hope ’26 brings continued incremental improvements at home and moments of nature inspired verse outdoors.

Seventy-five-plus thumbnail reviews are an impressive achievement, especially when the reviews display such an understanding of what constitutes good music. (Also a great way to get mileage, other than listening pleasure, out of one’s record collection!) There are a few not here that I might have listed. But that’s okay, as your list has so many shining diamonds – especially unheralded jazz and prog – my input would be like recommending Van Gogh use additional shades of paint.

    “Have a cigar,” Bruce!

      Appreciate those words, Pete.

As for your other comment re the decade, if we’re all chugging along in ’29 I think the idea of a ‘Best of the Best’ is a fine idea for a group project.

Wot, no Camel! The Snow Goose was released in 1975 and that’s often cited as their best album.

The others in my collection from 1975 are either Best Of compilations or by bands too obscure to feature in your list here, so they don’t count.

Love Camel, but have never been a fan of ‘The Snow Goose’. Leans too far into the saccharine for me. ‘Moonmadness’ is probably my pick, an album that will certainly make the list for ’76, if masochism gets the better of me.

The obscure most certainly counts, Neil! I would dearly love to know what you enjoy(ed) from 1975 that didn’t make this list. After all, I needed to reject 200 or more albums, especially in the prog and jazz-rock arenas.

As always, your reports/reviews make me remember things I’d forgotten, or reassess things I’d remembered. Right now, I’d say my 25 fave albums of ’75 (including jazz with not-jazz) would be, in alphabetical order . . .

    Bee Gees, “Main Course”
    Black Sabbath, “Sabotage”
    Burning Spear, “Marcus Garvey”
    Earth, Wind and Fire, “Gratitude”
    Eno, “Another Green World”
    Fripp/Eno, “Evening Star”
Steve Hackett, “Voyage of the Acolyte”
Hawkwind, “Warrior at the Edge of Time”
The Headhunters, “Survival of the Fittest”
Henry Cow/Slapp Happy, “In Praise of Learning”
The Isley Brothers, “The Heat Is On”
    Keith Jarrett, “The Köln Concert”
Jethro Tull, “Minstrel in the Gallery”
Elton John, “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy”
    KISS, “ALIVE!”
    Kraftwerk, “Radioactivity”
    Fela Kuti, “Expensive Shit”
    Led Zeppelin, “Physical Graffiti”
    Neu!, “Neu 75”
    Parliament, “Mothership Connection”
    Split Enz, “Mental Notes”
    Steely Dan, “Katy Lied”
War, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”
    Wings, “Venus and Mars”
Frank Zappa, “One Size Fits All”

In re the great Jarrent album, if you’ve not seen the recent German film “Köln 75,” I highly recommend it. A fantastic telling of the tale of that’s record’s genesis.

In closing, and again, bravo! Bring on ’76!

Loved reading your list, JES. Lots of overlap and a big enough dollop of difference to fuel a lively conversation. 🙂
I note the inclusion of more (broadly defined) soul music. This is not an area of strength for me, the genre being much scarcer on the Aus airwaves than in the US.
I’ve extracted several of your picks for refresher listens over the next day or two, in particularly ‘In Praise of Learning’ and “Mothership Connection.’
And thanks for the Köln Concert lead. Sounds fascinating!

“Blood on the Tracks” was a highlight for me in 1975. The modesty isn’t feigned. I interpret it as an expression of an attitude that runs through his entire work: Bob Dylan remained a servant of the Blues.

Bruce I can barely remember when I was hatched let alone album release dates. I’m sure i could add a few to this list but just “so darn lazy” to look.

But what you have done is sneakily inspired me to give my listening habit a nudge to listen to music that never fails to give CB pleasure. The nudge will make me grab one of these (and others) records everyday for the next year.

Starting a couple days ago with Nebraska, which I took for a walk. Man what a good record. Conjures up so much emotion in me. “Wash away young CB’s sins”. Today as I type I’m listening to Katy Lied and again these guys knew how to put music together that made me bracket time to wallow in it.

I’m sure quite a few of your 75 choices will make the grade over the next 300 plus days. Thanks fella. Good work. PS. I snuck in Cream’s reunion at Royal Albert Hall yesterday.

I’ve been pondering what’s missing and it hit me. Discreet Music-Brian Eno.

Good recall Neil. Yes, that was a difficult decision as Discreet Music was a result of the minimalist interests that led Eno to Music For Airports.

I did compile a list of ‘Outliers’ or ‘Oddities’ for a separate post—an attempt to sidestep genre suffocation, but in the end ran out of time!
