So, the new album…
Yeah?
It’s called..?
Album.
Yes, the album. What’s it called?
Album.
You have a new record out, right?
Yeah.
Does it have a title?
Yeah.
And that is?
Album.
That’s what is printed on the record’s spine.
Yeah.
There’s a single lifted off the LP.
‘Course.
What is it?
Single.
Yes, we established there is a 7″. What’s written on the cover?
Single.
(Pause)
Right.
There’s a 12″ as well, I imagine.
Yeah.
Called 12″, presumably.
‘Course not.
(Sigh) What’s it called?
12″ Single.
Ah. Naturally.
On CD?
‘Course.
Called CD.
Compact Disc.
Silly me.
With the new digital format there’s not much point in tapes.
Nah.
You’re agreeing.
Yeah.
(pause)
No reel-to-reel tape.
(long pause)
But cassette.
Yeah.
8-Track cartridge? 78 RPM? Edison cylinder?
Ha fuckin’ ha.
OK, then let’s wra-

Sorry?
There’s a picture disc.

Thank you so much for your time.

My god I didn’t know they did that for all the formats, but of course they did. I just heard The Order of Death in my car last week (working through the T songs on my iPod catalog alpha from A>Z, since Covid now) and remembered that song was featured in a Miami Vice episode with the singer/actress Fiona who lights a room on fire (and herself I think) as that song fades out. Now was that the same album or have I got them confused? Check MP3 player

One of the few truly great performances I can boast seeing was PiL opening for INXS in ‘87 and the lewd shit Lydon said about your mate Hutchence and crew, as he spit in the air, then caught and wiped it on his nipple. What an imagination, that one!

The only part of that that’s true perhaps is the English.

There is a VHS tape as well, called Video, of course, but it is not considered canon as it includes other music videos from around the same period.
(I actually don’t know the album very well, Bill. Just had to have the variants as I loved the idea so much!)

It has Steve Vai and Jah Wobble on it dunnit? Brilliant stuff. I think the drummer who went on to drum with The Firm maybe too, bald guy.

Ginger Baker is on it too!

No way! That’s fabulous. The drums are really top notch, but that seems to be a PiL thing. All the way back to Flowers of Romance, very tribal

I’m all new to PiL. They certainly stayed with their naming approach!😆

It is a wonderful poke at the ‘industry’, don’t you think?

I was convinced that this was a ruse. Marvellous, regardless.
Thanks Bruce,

That’s probably because you could not imagine any sane sentient being searching out all those formats of the same album.
