ALBUM COVERS | PICKS AND PICS

Having launched into Instagram during lockdown, I kind of lost my appetite for its rapid digestive cycle after a year or so. More an icy pole than a proper meal, if you get what I mean. But a current September “challenge” caught my eye and so I decided to throw some records into the ring.

Here is a selection of the prompts, with my offering below.

DAY 2 — FLASHY TRASH

It doesn’t get much flashier or trashier than Eurodisco, and Zeus B. Held’s pseudo-band Rockets shine. Tinfoil suits, silver face paint, platform boots, the works! And yes, that is the classic Canned Heat song.

DAY 4 — GIRL TALK

Vinyl Connection makes a rare social media appearance. Or is it a stand in? Our lips are sealed.

DAY 6 — MR BASS MAN

Black Market [1976] was the seventh album by Weather Report and the first to feature virtuoso bassist Jaco Pastorius. Jaco filled the chair previously occupied by two outstanding bass players, Miroslav Vitous and Alphonso Johnson.

DAY 6 — ANIMAL HOUSE

A number of IG folk went with the film. Animal House not being a celluloid masterpiece I’ve partaken of, I went with wildlife.

German acid-rock trio Guru Guru released “Känguru”, their 4th LP, in 1972. What else could an Australian krautrock fan post? Well, as it happens, I did have another idea. Bet no-one has ever combined vinyl records with Lego mini-figs before!

Canis Lupus was the debut ‘solo’ LP from the Curved Air violinist, Darryl Way. A very entertaining album.

DAY 9 — PARTY LINE

The line went dead.

DAY 10 — DEAR MR/MS FANTASY

An unimaginative and literal response to the prompt. But a great debut album from 1967!

DAY 11 — REDHEAD

Main Picture: The brilliant Annie Lennox.

Inset: Evidence that not only did Vinyl Connection once have hair, he was a ‘Ranga’! Taken just before my Wimbledon debut, Spring 1973.

Responses, titters, and albums you might have posted for any of these… all welcome.

Me, titter? Never. Gosh, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do…again. For the redhead prompt I probably would have gone with Bowie (either Aladdin Sane or Space Oddity). And this is literal too, but for Dear Mr/Mrs Fantasy, I would go with Double Fantasy, with Mr. Lennon and Ms. Ono. And for Animal House, maybe Pet Sounds. If I weren’t so disgusted with a particular Irish musician’s anti-vaxx stance, I could have gone with an album of his that not only has a couple of animals (canines), but a lovely house as well…

The Van Morrison moments aren’t quite the same for me anymore either ha ha. I did hear Into the Mystic recently though and thought man, if I could just make something like that one day how happy I’d be! Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have some screws loose just the same. Bad diction, but hoping you get me!

EC, Van… Surely it isn’t compulsory to turn into a jerk as you age?
Agreed; Veedon Fleece is a great cover (and album). I recently spent some time with Common One too, and was transported. I think I am well practiced at separating the person from the music. A kind of self-serving denial. Anyway, moving on…

I don’t think there been a VC post featuring animals on album covers. I do recall making some notes for an ‘At The Zoo’ feature some years back.

Oh, don’t get me started on EC. Such a disappointment. And I certainly hope it isn’t compulsory to turn into a jerk as one ages…because that would mean, um…

Anyway, moving on…I think a VC post featuring animals is a fine idea.

Blonde as a child, then ginger, then kind of dull brunette, then goodbye follicles! And that’s the hair memoir complete.

Interesting picks, Bruce, as always, and even an appearance, or is it a stand-in? 🙂

And, once again, you whipped up some German stuff I had never heard of: Guru Guru’s “Känguru” – wow!

Wikipedia says they’re from Heidelberg, the town where I was born sometime in the last century. Not only that, apparently, some version of the group exists to this day and is currently touring: http://mani-neumeier.de/guruguru/guru_07_tourdates.htm

Next stop: Bonn, essentially my hometown. I grew up in the close by countryside!

Looks like I really should get to know Guru Guru! 🙂

Love your comments and connections, Christian. Keep ’em coming!

Guru Guru are brilliant if you love close-to-chaos psychedelic rock… they doubtless inspired Acid Mothers Temple.

I promise to find something from Bonn. Gauntlet taken up!

Thanks, Bruce. If anyone can pull it off finding some Krautrock band from Bonn it’s you! 🙂

Hm. Might not be able to deliver on that promise, Christian. Bonn was not a hotbed of innovative 70s indi bands, it seems.

Köln was another matter, of course. Heaps of significanat artists were based just downstream, including the leader of Rockets, above. Zeus B. Held hails from Köln!

No worries, Bruce. While Bonn is a lovely city, I guess it’s fair to say it’s also a bit sleepy. Köln, on the other hand, is a different story.

My all-time favorite German/Kölsch dialect singing band BAP (now Niedeckens BAP) are from Köln. 🙂

And that’s where I saw them live in the winter of 97-98!

Didn’t recognize you with out the Artful Dodger chapeau. I remember where I saw you before Bruce, in that Python/Peckinpah tennis flick. Or s it playing drums with that Cream band on that one song?

Oh, I’ve been around, CB. I was a stunt double for Ginger Baker for a while and actually played the piano in that Python sketch. Been approached for my life story, but the ducks didn’t line up. Well, they did but then some bastard shot them.
